AI Agents Are Already on the Payroll. It’s Time to Put Them on the Org Chart.

The debate over whether to bring AI into the workplace is over. In our latest HR Leaders Report, 82% of HR leaders said their organization already uses AI in HR processes, up from 69% a year earlier. Whether to adopt is mostly settled. What I hear in nearly every conversation now is a different question: Who’s managing it?

In most organizations, the honest answer is no one.

I don’t say that as a criticism. Teams across the business are building and running their own agents to get work done faster, but there’s rarely one place to see who built what, who’s using it or what it’s allowed to touch. We ran into this at isolved before we built anything for customers. When the person who set up an agent moves on without a clean handoff, the work their agent was doing can go with them. The technology was fine. The missing piece was management.

Here's how I think about it. Traditional software follows a defined set of rules. You configure it to do something, and it does what you expect. AI agents are different. They're probabilistic, meaning they can produce different responses or recommendations even when given the same information. They can interpret information, make recommendations and take actions within the boundaries they're given. That's what makes them useful, but it also means you need to manage more than whether the technology is working. You need to know whether the agent is doing its job well.

That means AI agents need what any worker needs: a defined role, someone accountable for them, a way to measure their performance and a clear record of what they are and what they can access.

IT can own the infrastructure these agents run on. But setting expectations, reviewing performance and holding someone accountable are all part of the work of managing a workforce. That’s HR’s craft, and it always has been.

This is what we mean by Workforce Capital Management (WCM): managing the full workforce, people and agents together, in one system, with HR responsible for both. And it only works if it lives where HR already works, not in one more tool bolted beside the ones they’re already juggling.

So we built Agent View. With isolved People Cloud™, you can toggle your org chart to Agent View and see your isolved and third-party agents in the same place as your people. What I like most, though, is what it isn’t. It isn’t a separate AI dashboard that someone has to remember to check. It’s in the org chart HR opens every day. The same structure that tells you who manages your people now tells you who manages your agents, and how well they’re doing.

The Guardian, our AI agent for payroll, shows up on the org chart right next to the payroll team it works with, reporting to the same manager.

Click into The Guardian and you land on something that looks a lot like an employee profile. You can see who the agent reports to, who created it and what it’s allowed to access. It explains in plain language what the agent does: The Guardian monitors every payroll run in real time, flags potential errors before the run closes, auto-corrects low-risk formatting issues and routes anything unusual to a person for approval. And it shows how the agent is performing, with the numbers a manager would expect on any report: accuracy, corrections applied, hours of review time saved, items processed in the last pay cycle and any open alerts. A person stays in control of the corrections that reach anyone’s paycheck.

The Guardian is just the beginning. As we release more agents, they’ll show up in Agent View automatically, alongside your people and the third-party agents you add. As your workforce grows, you’ll always know where each agent fits and who manages them, all within the same management system you already use.

The measure of AI in your business won’t be how much of it you’ve deployed. It will be whether you can say, for every agent, who’s accountable for it and whether it’s doing its work well. That is WCM, and HR should lead it.
