The list of states that required paid family leave (PFL) used to be minimal, but over the last year this list has grown exponentially. State paid family leave mandates employers who operate in that state or have employees who work in that state to provide prolonged time off related to certain qualifying events.
This leave extends beyond state sick leave and the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and provides pay in conjunction with the leave. This pay is sourced through employer only, employee only, or employer and employee contributions as a tax on employee’s wages/employer payroll taxes.
The below chart lists what states have a state specific paid family leave, who contributes to that insurance fund (if at all), the minimum rate of that contribution designated by the state, and when employees can begin receiving benefits.
